Yasawa is the 2020 Vodafone Vanua Champion
The Yasawa rugby team edged Macuata 14-10 and was crowned as the Vodafone Vanua Championship at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Yasawa took the lead of 7-0 in the first 10 minutes of play however a strong comeback from Macuata earned them a penalty try to level the scores 7-all.
In the 30th minute of play, Macuata applied pressure on the Yasawa defense giving them a penalty and also taking them to a 10-7 lead at the breather.
The second half was a nail-biting experience for the spectators as Yasawa was awarded a penalty try to extend their lead to 14-10 however Macuata bounced back to extend their lead with another converted try to 17-14 and Yasawa leveled the score margin to 17 all.
But it was Yasawa who had the last say when they scored their winning try with only two minutes remaining to clinch the Vodafone Vanua Championship trophy beating a courageous Macuata team 24-17.
Yasawa Head Coach Iliesa Tanivula was happy with his teams’ performance as he was looking forward to being part of the Skipper Cup competition next year.
“Hats off to the boys for their effort and they deserved the win,” said Tanivula.
“My message was simple, keep on working and applying pressure and look for possession and try to execute our game plan.
“Our aim this season was to qualify for the Skipper Cup and I’m glad we did.”
