Vodafone Fijian Under 20 lost to Georgia and will play Scotland for a chance to remain in the Championship next year.

Our Vodafone Fijian Under-20 went down to Georgia 12-8 in a tightly contested match to determine their placing in the World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

Fiji created momentum early in the game with the first try from winger Epeli Momo coming in the eighth minute.

Robust lock Etonia Waqa made another clean break on the 33min with an offload to Captain Tevita Ikanivere who charged over to dive in for their second, only to be denied, when the ball slipped from his hand due to the wet weather conditions.

It was a tough battle between the two teams at 5-0 until the 50th minute when Caleb Muntz kicked a penalty over the bars taking Fiji’s lead to 8.

It took the Georgians until the 66th minute to find their first points. After 6 straight phases, forcing Fiji to defend from their 22m, Georgian #8 Iashagashvili finally found space to dive over the try line and close the gap to 8-7.

The arm wrestle continued in muddly and wet conditions right to the 80th minute, when the Georgian forwards built up pressure through their pick and drive; finally breaking Fiji’s defence, scoring in the 81st minute secure them the victory and also a place in next year’s World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

Vodafone Fijian Under-20 will play Scotland next to fight for the 11th position and a chance to remain in the Championship next year.

The team that sits at 12th position at the end of the World Rugby-20 Championship will be relegated down to the World Rugby Under-20 Trophy Competition.
