Under 20 preparation on course to a big calendar of competition ahead.

The Vodafone Fiji Under 20’s extended squad have assembled in Suva for a 3 days training camp.

The camp follows last month’s talent identification process where players from across country were put through their paces by Fiji Rugby Academy coaches and Head Coach Kele Leawere to identify the top prospects for a big calendar of competition for the Under 20 programme.

During the camp, players will be closely monitored to see their progress and continue to develop their skills and conditioning in a two pronged focus of both selection for the national squad plus continued to development of junior rugby athletes.

Leawere said that the camp will be an intense introduction to high performance for the young talent.

“It will be a tough 3 days camp as most of the boys are meeting for the first time and we want to see their level of fitness and strength after the trial 2 weeks ago,” said Leawere.

He explained that they will closely monitor the players on how they observe and learn the structures applied to them in camp.

“This camp we will see how much they can observe and learn to be ready to be selected into the Fiji Under 20s.”

Leawere said that they will be tight on their schedule to try and get the boys up to that level they’re vying for.

The Vodafone Fiji Under 20s will contest the Oceania Under 20 Championships in against Autralia, Japan and New Zealand on the Gold Coast from the 26th of April to the 5th of May.

“We will be playing New Zealand on the 26 of April and we know it’s going to be tough as they have players from ITM academies and some from Super Rugby academies as well,” he added.

“We want the boys to step up and give these teams a good go.”

Following the Oceania Championships the Under 20 programme will head into preparations for the World Rugby Junior World Championships in Argentina in June.
