While the nation celebrates the return of our 7s heroes, developing girl’s rugby continues in Lautoka and at the same to identify potentials for the U18 girls team for the Youth Commonwealth games. Fiji Rugby Union development team wraps up the skills clinic this afternoon (Thursday) and now looking forward to the trials tomorrow where all knowledge gained will be tested on real game situation.
Schools visited includes Ba Provincial, Drasa Secondary School, Jasper Williams, Natabua High School and Ratu Navula.
Most of the girls haven’t played rugby before so the main focus was on basic skills.
Women’s Development Officer Vela Naucukidi was impressed with the interest in the sugar city.
“It’s been overwhelming just to see the girls responded to our visit and how they handle the drills with much enthusiasm,” Ms Naucukidi said.
With that kind of response, Ms Naucukidi said it is important to provide the right resources and find ways to nurture them.
“We’ve accomplish the first step which is to see the interest and how they response, now we have to make sure to provide where we can to help them grow.”
Majority of them play other sports, for example soccer, hockey and netball and it’s a challenge to make the girls want to stay with rugby.
