Three-peat for Suva in Skipper Cup
Suva has defended the 2020 Skipper Cup title for the third time in a row after defeating Naitasiri 16-13 in the final at ANZ Stadium this evening.
Suva’s Enele Malele was perfect off the tee kicking two consecutive penalties as the host led 6 nil in 26 minutes.
Naitasiri managed to get a slender lead before the breather after a try from Necani Nawaqadau which was then converted by Etonia Rokotuisawa.
Suva’s Malele again started off perfectly adding three points just 3 minutes after the second spell kicked off.
Rokotuisawa then gave Naitasiri a narrow lead after slotting in a penalty kick. Naitasiri led 10-9.
The match was getting intense in the second half as Naitasiri number 8 Isireli Kaloucava was shown the marching orders for a dangerous tackle on Suva player.
Suva was awarded a penalty try and the host led 16-10.
Rokotuisawa’s consolation penalty kick was not enough for them to go past Suva.
Suva skipper John Stewart said “We came with a goal and that was to win the Skipper Cup final.”
“We knew Naitasiri had a good kicker and we planned to avoid giving penalties and worked hard when we had the ball in hand.
“We want to thank all the supporters, friends and our families for being with us through-out this season” said Stewart.
