Strength & Conditioning: Niuqila Appointed to Support Referees

In a move boost to Fiji’s rugby refereeing standards, Vanavasa Niuqila has been appointed to the Fiji Rugby Union’s Referees High Performance Unit. The 26-year-old from Kuiva Bau Tailevu, with maternal links to Nabudrau Noco in Rewa, will play a crucial role in enhancing the fitness and performance of elite referees set to officiate in upcoming local competitions and international tournaments.

Niuqila, a passionate advocate for fitness in sports, began his Strength & Conditioning (S&C) journey with formal studies at the Fiji National University. Reflecting on his career, he highlighted a pivotal moment during his studies when he was attached to the Fiji 7s team. “That attachment really inspired me when I got the chance to work alongside a legend in S&C, Master Naca Cawanibuka. I never looked back,” shared Niuqila.

Equipped with a Diploma in Sports Science and a Level 1 Certificate in Australian Strength & Conditioning, Niuqila emphasizes the importance of fitness across all sports disciplines. “For me, I see fitness for referees as an essential component. They often run more miles than the players during a match,” he explained. He also pointed to the high standards set by renowned referees like Tevita Rokovereni and James Bolabiu, whose fitness levels enabled them to officiate at the highest levels of the game.

James Bolabiu, the Referees High Performance Manager, expressed his enthusiasm about Niuqila’s appointment, noting that this is the first time the referees’ program has had a dedicated S&C coach. “We look forward to progressing throughout the year, especially with our major national competitions and international tournaments,” Bolabiu said.

Niuqila recently conducted his first session with the elite referees at Bidesi Park, where their fitness levels were tested. With his inclusion in the program, the goal is to elevate performance standards and ensure referees are in peak condition to meet the demands of modern rugby.
