Strategy adjustment for Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team
Fiji Airways Fijian 7s Coach Gareth Baber and his coaching panel are now re-looking at their strategy for the 2019/2020 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
With the onset of COVID-19, the tournaments in Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Paris have been postponed to September.
“We’ve made specific changes to our work plan heading into the Olympic Games next year,” Baber said.
“These changes have been a result of thorough discussions I’ve had with our Strength and Conditioning Coach Nacanieli Cawanibuka and Assistant Coach Brad Harris.
“These changes will ensure that the players are where they need to be when the season starts,” Baber added.
Baber said it’s a strange period for everybody and he thanked the players for staying active and for doing their personal training sessions at home.
“It’s a good opportunity for the boys to reconnect their families and at the same time get some much-needed recovery too,” he said.
“This recovery is not just physical but mental as well,” Baber commented.
“We travel the world and spend a lot of time away from our families and I know it can be difficult for all of us.
“Spending time with our families is certainly the best healer,” he added.
Meanwhile, players such as Aminiasi Tuimaba, Alasio Naduva, Ratu Meli Derenalagi and Livai Ikanikoda are among the thousands of essential service providers in the front-lines of COVID-19.
“I’m extremely proud of the work put in by our players who are involved in the outreach work of Fiji’s discipline services.
“Not just during this COVID-19 crisis but also when the cyclone hit Fiji earlier this month,” Baber added.
