Skipper Cup R10, Suva v Nadi Match Report
Skipper Cup round 9 clash between Suva and Nadi was an intense battle as Nadi hold the strong Suva side 12 – 3 right to the 74th minutes before the capital side scored a double in the dying minutes, recording another win 22 – 3.
Nadi scored first blood early in the first half after Suva conceded an early penalty. Suva build the momentum early with their open play and fast flow rugby.
However, Nadi was intact with their strong defense which denied most scoring opportunities for Suva in the first half.
Nadi’s defense was solid and they were consistent in the first half, a few indiscipline cases from both teams resulted in yellow cards after 2 players from both sides were sin-binned.
There were a few untidy plays from Suva as unforced errors caused the capital side to lose consistency in their game play.
Suva’s defense was solid throughout the 80 minutes of game time as they manage to prevent Nadi from crossing over the try line.
What happened
8 minutes after kick-off Suva conceded a penalty inside their 22 after a Suva player did not roll away from the ruck, Sela Toga of Nadi kicked the penalty over to put them up on the board 3 – 0.
On the 38 minutes, a penalty try was awarded to Suva as Nadi repeatedly collapsed the scrum a few meters away from the try line, giving Suva the lead 7 – 3.
Just before halftime, Tui Cakacaka of Suva scored a try in the corner after a series of pick and drive from the capital side, extending their lead 12 – 3.
After a few phases of fast play followed by pick and drive, Suva center Apisalome Vota saw a gap to run in and score another try further extending their lead 17 – 3.
Right in the final minutes, Serupepeli Vularika kicked the ball down Nadi’s 22m territory as substitution Sireli Maqala race down the field to score their final try of the match 22 – 3.
In the women’s match, Suva also beat Nadi 45 – 20 while Nadi claimed the victory in the Under-19 game 23 – 22.
