Sevens players to add flavour in Round 2 of Skipper Cup
The second round of the Fiji Rugby Skipper Cup is expected to be filled with a lot of flavours as fans will be witnessing our 7s stars this weekend.
Fiji Airways Fijian 7s Coach Gareth Baber said “It’s been a long way to watch the 7s players back in action but they get that opportunity this weekend.”
Lanky Sevuloni Mocenacagi will be at outside centre together with extended squad members Peceli Nacebe at fly-half and Rusiate Nasove on the flanks for Nadroga.
Winger Jiuta Wainiqolo and Terio Tamani will don the Blues jumper for Suva while Napolioni Ratu starts for Yasawa at Number 10.
“Not everybody has pushed themselves back into the Skipper Cup contentions as there are some players playing for the feeder teams” he said.
Baber added he is excited to see his 7s players featuring for their provincial teams and getting challenged in the various positions against some tougher opponents.
He said “It’s good to see players playing in position they haven’t played.
I’m just keen to see the boys get challenged physically and match up with the players who have been playing Skipper Cup on a yearly basis.”
Baber highlighted there has been a void left after the departure of Vilimoni Botitu and Aminiasi Tuimaba.
He added he will continue to scout for players during the Skipper Cup.
“I will be looking within the Skipper Cup and the feeder teams as well to see what talent is out there.”
He said “I know that sometimes 7s talents can be slightly different to the 15’s talent and vise-versa.
I looking at those guys who got the character and mental skills to be able to deliver in the tough environments of playing rugby here in Fiji.”
Baber is anticipating a huge support for teams featuring the 7s stars tomorrow.
“It’s been long while since we have seen 7s players playing.
“It’s also been a long while since majority of them have played in the Skipper Cup so I’m excited just like the fans to see how these players front up, how they deal with the pressure of being a 7s player and get on with what they need to do for their Skipper Cup teams” said Baber.
