Second shot for Bose

For George Bose, rugby has always been more than just a game, it was a potential avenue for supporting his family financially.

The Draiba in Navosa lad was part of three major 7’s rugby clubs in Fiji which had been helping him provide for his family.

He started with Yamacia Rugby Club, moved through the ranks with the Tabadamu team, and now finds him playing with the Lavidi Brothers, three of the most competitive and influential teams in Fiji’s local 7s circuit.

Last year, Bose earned a spot in the Fijian 7s extended squad, a dream for any young Fijian player.

However, he didn’t advance to the main squad. He now has been given a second opportunity through the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s Head Coach Osea Kolinisau who scouted him from the Kadavu 7s last month.


“This second call-up is incredibly important to me. I’ve seen just how tough it is to make it to this level—it takes so much hard work and dedication,” he said.

Bose said he hopes to earn a contract that would allow him to give back financially to his family.

“Playing center means there’s a lot of competition, but it’s always up to the individual. The commitment you put into training can make all the difference,” Bose said.

“Training with the national team is on another level entirely, and every session is a reminder of the dedication it takes to stay in the game,” he added.

Seasoned Fijian 7s player Sevuloni Mocenacagi who played with Bose in the Yamacia Club continues to encourage the youngster.

“I am happy to be training with him (Mocenacagi) again. Having someone with his experience and encouragement on the field pushes me to keep going.”

Bose is currently in camp with the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s in Suva and is hoping to secure a spot in Coach Kolinisau’s squad to the Dubai 7’s.

The Dubai 7’s kicks off at the end of this month.
