Penaia Cakobau’s Dream Come True
In a dream come true for rising rugby star Penaia Cakobau, the 30year old lad from Somosomo Taveuni received an exciting call-up to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in their quest to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This opportunity provides a chance for him to live his dream of donning the white jumper and play along side some of the best in the country.
Passionate about rugby, his journey began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the team that clinched the coveted Vodafone Under 18 Deans Trophy in 2011. After making a name for himself in Fiji, he pursued his rugby career in France and later New Zealand, where he played with the North Harbour development team.
Returning to Fiji in 2018, Cakobau showcased his talent with Suva in the Skipper Cup competition for three years before heading back to New Zealand at the end of 2022. Currently, he is focused on further developing his skills as a professional rugby player and securing a potential Super Rugby contract. His approach to the game is one of steady progress and hard work.
“When I received the call, I was both excited and it was surreal,” Cakobau said. “At a certain stage, I never thought I would get this opportunity, but it has set a new benchmark for me. I need to work hard to maintain my place in this environment.”
The opportunity to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians means Cakobau will have the chance to learn from and compete alongside some of the best in the game, including Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. Cakobau is stepping into the role previously held by Kavaia Tagivetaua and is eager to prove himself on the field.
“Every rugby player has a list of things they want to accomplish,” Cakobau explained. “You write them down, motivate yourself, and train hard, especially when no one is looking. Anything is possible if you are willing to make the sacrifices.”
As Cakobau prepares for this exciting chapter in his career, his determination and hard work serve as an inspiration to many. The FIJI Water Flying Fijians look forward to seeing how he will contribute to their efforts in the Pacific Nations Cup and beyond.
Meanwhile, Selestino Ravutaumada will be replaced by fellow Olympic Silver medalist Ponipate Logamasi who will make cover on the roster for the backline.
Mick Byrne shared: “Stino is being monitored at the moment after surgery to his shoulder last week Monday and will be out for a couple of weeks.
According to the National Coach, Ravutaumada will undergo rehabilitation for a full recovery before being called to represent Fiji again.
