National Women’s 10’s to expose unidentified talents from around the country
Fiji Rugby Development Unit will roll out its National Women’s 10’s competition this weekend at Garvey Park, Tavua.
After 3 weeks of hosting Women’s 10’s around the country, FRU Development will now host a National 10’s format where best teams from all 5 regions will compete.
FRU Development has covered 5 regions in the past 3 weeks, beginning the competition at Subril Park, Labasa then hosting the Western region at Churchill Park, Lautoka covering 2 regions. During the Diwali Holiday on Monday the central and eastern region were hosted at Bidesi Ground.
This will be the last women’s 10’s competition in the country where Fijiana head coach Senirusi Seruvakula will draft his extended squad for the 2021 Rugby World Cup.
The five teams competing at this National 10’s competition are Central Falcons from Central division, the Highlanders from the Eastern division, Roosters from Western 1, Crusaders from Western 2 and the Sharks from the Northern division.
FRU Development Manager Koli Sewabu said that it’s (Women’s 10’s programme) a talent identification programme where FRU Development are going out into different regions to scout for talents.
“It’s a talent identification programme and not only Vanua teams and Skipper teams will be showcasing their talents, but also other teams within these regions,” said Sewabu.
“This is an opportunity for the Fijiana coach and his panels to identify more talents,” Sewabu added.
“We have 5 regions altogether and after we roll out our 10’s competition within all these regions, then our coaching penals will choose best teams from each region and then we’ll bring these teams together for a National tens format at Garvey Park, Tavua,” he added.
“The ones who are already in the system will have to prove themselves and put them together with other players and see who is deserves to be in the wider training group ahead of the Rugby World Cup,” said Sewabu.
“Coach and his management will pick a wider training squad that complement those who’re already in the Women’s HPU programme as they prepare for the Rugby World Cup 2021,” Sewabu added.
The Women’s 10’s competition is an initiative by FRU Development in partnership with Fiji Rugby High Performance Unit.
The programme bring talents from the outskirt of the country and put these players on to Fiji Rugby Women’s High-Performance radar.
The 10’s competition also provides more opportunities to those who haven’t been seen or identified through Vanua and Skipper Cup competition.
The Women’s National 10’s format will be held this Saturday 9 am at Garvey Park, Tavua and entry fees are 2 dollars flat.
