National Provincial Girls Tournament in Nadi
Fiji Rugby Union in conjunction with UN Women will host the second annual National Girls Provincial 7s Tournament at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on Wednesday December 12.
32 teams from 12 provinces will descend on Nadi for the tournament that sees a mix of tag rugby and 7s being played in age groups of Under 15, 17 and 19.
The competition was introduced as the next leveL of progression through tag rugby and the Get into Rugby programme, to retain the players in the game. The National Girls Provincial 7s Tournament shows an encouraging pathway to the next stages of playing rugby and ultimately lays a platform for talent development towards future Fijiana 7s and 15s players.
This is only the second consecutive year for the National Women’s Age Grade Championship. In 2017 the competition was open to only two age grade (Under 14, 17) with a total of six Provincial unions participating and both grades playing Tag rugby.
In 2018 participating Provincial programmes have increased to 12 which is a positive reflection on the growth of female participation in rugby and the growing success of the Get into Rugby programme. Under 15 will play Tag rugby whilst the Under 17 and 19 will play 7s a-side.
Through the relationship with UN Women, who are funding the accommodation and meals for the tournament, the 2018 Championship will also encourage women’s involvement across all aspects of the game including Coaching, Match Officiating, Medical support, Strength and Conditioning.
