Nasinu’s rising star shares dreams
At just 19 years old, Sainiana’s journey from the fields of Milo Kaji Rugby to the ANZ Marama Competition is a testament to her determination and passion for rugby.
Sainiana’s love for rugby began in her primary school days when she first stepped onto the field during the Milo Kaji tournaments.
Unfazed by gender norms, she fearlessly joined the boys’ team for the Namosi Highlanders, and was the only girl to participate in the Namosi Highlanders team.
The Namosi native then joined Ballentine Memorial School and continued to dominate the game, earning her place in the boys’ team until 2022. It was during this time that her teachers recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue rugby professionally.
Transitioning to the 2023 Royal Tea Ranadi champion Nasinu Womens side, Qoro was able to catch the attention of selectors and secured a spot in the extended squad of the Fijian Drua Women.
Though she missed out on making the final cut, Sainiana remains determined to work hard in this ANZ Marama Competition for another chance to represent her country on the international stage.
She said, “Living away from my family and staying in Suva with my aunt, I have faced financial challenges, often struggling to afford transportation to training sessions and games.
“But the support of my family, who travel all the way from my village to cheer me on in the weekends, is a source of motivation for me.”
Qoro said her inspiration comes from Olympian and former Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s captain Rusila Nagasau.
Qoro and her Nasinu Womens side will face Nadi in Round 2 of the ANZ Marama Championship on Saturday at Bukhurst Park, Suva.
