Now that they’re running their competition in-Island, various talents from around the Mamanuca Islands have make it to the Malolo team in the Vodafone Vanua Championship this year.
Being guided by Nadroga Rugby Union since its inception into the Vanua Championship, the Malolo rugby team is now based in the Solevu Village in the Mamanuca Islands.
Malolo Rugby Union official Ratu Jone Tuirewa said “The team is made of players from Mamanuca group of Islands which consists of four village and all the resorts around it.”
He added “In the past the island based rugby players wanted to play for Malolo but the team was heavily guided by Nadroga Rugby Union.”
The teams training camp is based at the Solevu Village.
Ratu Tuirewa added that it’s the first time for a lot of the players to play in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and they are really working hard to match all other teams in the competition.
He said “Our main aim now is to take rugby back to the islands and get the boys back in the islands to play.”
“It has been hard getting this boys together since COVID-19 hit Fiji” he said.
“The main challenge for us is to get the players fit and understand the laws since no one has played in a highly competitive tournament before, so all the players are new to this championship.
We are hoping for a good outcome and if get a chance we will try out best to qualify for Skipper Cup” said Ratu Turewa.
