Malakati flyer “Waisea Nacuqu” to lead Men’s 7s team at the Commonwealth Games.

Waisea Nacuqu has been selected to captain the Team Fiji Men’s 7s to the
Commonwealth Games in England this weekend.

Hardwork, perseverance, determination, and sacrifice have finally paid off for the 29-year-old playmaker however it now depends on him and his brothers on how they will work together to win the first ever Gold medal at the event.

Team Fiji Mens 7s Head Coach Ben Gollings believe its about time Nacuqu takes on the captaincy role and lead the pack in one of the most prestigious events.

Gollings said there are senior players in the team who will assist Nacuqu. Players such as Jerry Tuwai, Josua Vakurinabili and Tevtia Daugunu have also captained the side in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

“When we called up the captaincy role, we have been training more of a leadership group and Tevita has been leading that along with Wise and coming into this big competition, looking at Wise from a standpoint, he connects with the players and is very instrumental on the field,” said Gollings.

“He has really stepped up in terms of the leadership role so it’s an opportunity for him and I think we’re all excited about having him lead the team.

Known as the ‘game breaker’ Nacuqu has been the savior for the Fijian 7s team on many occasions scoring the winning try but for this weekend Nacuqu has a mammoth task ahead of him and his brothers.

Fiji has never won Gold Medal in the Commonwealth Games but they have won three silver in 1988, 2002, and 2018 while they won a bronze in 2006.

Despite being crowned as dual Olympics gold medalists, in the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games, this team is eager to stand tall on the podium once the tournament draws to an end.

Gollings named a formidable side with the combination of six gold medalists and those on form in this year’s sevens series.

The return of Aminiasi Tuimaba will ignite a flare of exciting rugby in defense and offense due to his raging attacks and unforgiving defense that creates an atmosphere of nervousness to his opponents while Sireli Maqala will add more firepower with his game-breaking style.

Fiji will take on Zambia in their first match this Saturday at 12.02am, followed by Canada at 8.32am and then Wales on 12.02am on Sunday the 31 st of July.
