Lautoka crowned 2020 Women’s Skipper Cup Champions
Lautoka women’s rugby team has been crowned the 2020 Skipper Cup champions after beating Naitasiri 10-7 at ANZ Stadium.
Both teams were locked nil all at half time before the Maroons powered away two quick tries in the second spell to seal the victory.
Sesenieli Donu scored first for Lautoka in the 77th minute after which replacement Taraivini Adiraba dived in the corner to extend the lead for the visitors from the West.
Naitasiri picked up the momentum but it was too late. Fijiana extended squad member Lavenia Tinai managed to get a consolation try at the 40th minute. She then converted her own try but it was late for the Highlanders to bounce back.
Lautoka Captain Karalaini Naisewa said “I was confident that we will score in the second half. I told the girls to just be clam and work hard when we have ball in hand.”
“We managed push Naitasiri back in their half and scored two quick tries” said Naisewa.
Naitaisiri captain Sereima Leweniqila said “My girls played their hearts out but we were unfortunate on the day.”
Lautoka walked away with $5000 as winners while Naitaisiri received $2000.
