Kadavu Rugby 15’s club games back on after 24 years

After 24 years of playing it’s last 15 aside club games, the Kadavu Rugby Union have revamped their in-Island club competition this year with the aim of building a provincial side to compete at top level domestic rugby.

The last official KRU club games were played back in 1998 and since then club games have died out in the Island. The Kadavu team continued to compete in the Island Zone Rugby Competition before it came into a halt in 2009.

Last week the KRU ran its first round of club competition where 8 clubs in the Tavuki zone have registered in the round robin format competition and the union are expecting clubs from the rest of the zones to register in the next few days.

Kadavu Rugby Committee member Jekeli Boginivalu explained that chiefs in the Island have agreed to begin with the competition as they all share the need for a Kadavu team to compete at a top-level domestic competition.

“It’s been 24 years since we played 15s club games competition in the Island, and the Kadavu Rugby committee together with chiefs from all districts have come up with the conclusion to begin our club games, build a team and contest the national domestic competition,” said Boginivalu.

“We build up our competition in the past months with a 10 aside round robin and right now we have transition into official round 1 of 15 aside,”

“We have 8 clubs, Namalata kei Namuana Rugby club, Ravitaki Rugby club, Service Rugby club, Drue rugby club, Namara Rugby club, Waisomo Rugby club, Natumua Rugby club, and Tavuki Rugby club, and we’re looking at 10 more clubs to register in the next few days,” explained Boginivalu.

Fiji Rugby is also working on reviving the Island Zone competition, which is one of the most contested competitions for Maritime teams in the country.

This competition will provide a pathway for Maritime teams to contest their way up into the top tier of the nation’s domestic competition.

The competition has been the breeding ground of many of Fiji Rugby legends in the past with the likes of Kaiava Salusalu, Joeli Veitayaki, Sireli Matavesi Snr, Vesito Rauluni, Jone Daunivucu, Rupeni Caucaunibuca, Jone Railomo and so on.

Kadavu has produced numerous rugby stars with the likes of  Tuimasi Tubananitu, Sela Gutugutuiwai, Ilai Musunamasi,  Isikeli Cagilaba, Mosese Nabati, Setareki Tawake, Nemani Matirewa, Joeli Matanatabu, Sale Sorovaki, Leone Nakarawa, Setareki Tawake, Sevu Reece, Albert Tuisue, Sireli Naqelevuki  to name a few.
