FRU Annual Awards Gala on track.
Fiji Rugby Union have announced the date for their Annual Awards Gala to celebrate the achievements of teams and individuals from the 2018 Rugby year.
The event, hosted by TFL at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Friday February 8th is set to be a joyful occasion with many significant milestones achieved internationally and domestically across the season.
Tickets for the event are currently on sale and can be obtained from Fiji Rugby Union, with guests being offered a premium three course meal, beverage package and more importantly exclusive access to front row of the major awards as they happen.
The 2017 FRU Awards coincided with the announcement of Fiji’s bid towards obtaining a leg of the HSBC World Sevens, and the process still in motion, provided an exciting boost of energy to the event.
For this year’s event the FRU will again be revealing something new that will be sure to turn heads for the rugby faithful across the country.
The gala event will bring together every dimension of the game in Fiji with awards being presented at grass root and development level from Secondary Schools, match offiicials and administrators right through to the domestic and international players of the year across sevens and XVs.
The Deans Cup was again a thrilling contest providing plenty of talent into the U16 and U18 talent pathway system, then the Swire Shipping Warriors Pacific Challenge Campaign, the nailbiting finish to the Skipper Cup and Vodafone Vanua Championship and of course the NRC title won by the Fiji Airways Drua means there will be much to celebrate and many exciting players to choose from when the nominees and winners are read out.
Previous winners of the top awards have included current Fiji Airways Flying Fijian and Olympic gold medallist Leone Nakarawa as the 2017 XVs Player of the Year, and Cape Town Fiji Airways 7s Captain Kalione Nasoko as the 7s player of the year.
With five successful series titles, a Commonwealth Games silver medal, Rookie of the Year and five players in the HSBC World Sevens Series Dream Team, the contest for the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s player of the year is sure to be tough.
Likewise for the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians, after another successful World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup campaign in June, 8 debutants and the history making victory against France, John McKee’s options for the XVs player of the year are also numerous, with names like Semi Radradra, Vereniki Goneva, Viliame Mata and even Frank Lomani all floating around as potential candidates for the nations’ top award.
The 2018 event will also be an exciting celebration for women’s rugby with the extension and success of the Women’s Domestic Championship, won by Malolo in 2018, as well as the Fiji Airways Fijiana XVs taking out the Oceania Women’s Championship in Lautoka.
