Flying Fijians record a famous win over Wallabies at RWC
Flying Fijians have recorded a famous victory at the Rugby World Cup, beating Wallabies 22-15 at Stade Geoffroy Guichard today.
The win now wide opens Pool C as the Flying Fijians move to six points, level with Australia and four behind Wales with two matches still to play.
Simione Kuruvoli was perfect off the tee slotting in two penalties within 20 minutes. Flying Fijians led 6-3.
The first try of the game came in the 22nd minute through Nawaqanitawase. The wing chased the long ball, took a quick lineout and combined with Samu Kerevi before he received the offload to add five more to to Australia’s tally.
Flying Fijians dominated the game in all aspects while the Wallabies kept on making fouls. These fouls were converted into penalties and Kuruvoli added six more points and the halftime ended 12-8 in favor of the Flying Fijians.
Fiji extended their lead when Carter Gordon misjudged the bounce of a high ball which invited Josua Tuisova to storm through and make it 19-8 in the 42nd minute.
Suli Vunivalu went over late on for Australia after Fiji scored another penalty but it was not enough and they held on to complete a memorable 22-15 victory.
Head Coach Simon Raiwalui thanked the players for the gallant effort and said they had been preparing for this from the very first day they came into camp.
“It’s not just today, it’s a combination of the work that we have done since the beginning of the campaign.
The boys have worked really hard, pushed into the limits and never once did they complain and when you work hard, you get the results so yeah super proud of them” said Raiwalui.
Flying Fijians captain Waisea Nayacalevu also thanked the players for putting up an impressive show and also dedicated this win to the Fijian fans at home and around the globe.
“I told the boys today, this is our final and will determine whether we want to go up to the quarters or not so our mindset was to come into this week, do-or-die so we came here to do our best, fight until the end and the result will take care of itself,” said Nayacalevu.
Josua Tuisova was named the player of the match after scoring a try and gaining some exciting meters on the field before being substituted in the second spell.
He said “It’s history and I want to thank the boys for their hard work, and giving everything they got.
I told them in the second half to empty the tank, give everything they have, and just try to win this game, we treated this game as a final.”
Flying Fijians face Georgia in their next match on September the 30th at 3.45am {FJT}.
