Flying Fijians get the feel of mighty Sand Dunes
Fiji Airways Flying Fijians fitness, endurance and team bonding was tested when they went through an explosive session at the historic Sand Dunes in Sigatoka this morning.
For some it was a usual day at the Dunes while in camp but for many it was their first trip to the iconic training field.
Veteran Lock Leone Nakarawa is one of the players who trained at the Sand Dunes when he represented the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s in the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, 2016.
He said the players were told about the level of commitment required while training on the Sand Hills.
“Just like the trainer said before the session, he doesn’t care what your name is and where you come. Training at Sand Dunes will test your character. If you can do it here than any-where in the world you can prosper” Nakarawa said.
Nakarawa also highlighted that training at the Sand Dunes also strengthens the bond in the team.
“We worked in teams and motivated every-one to complete the sets. This way we will be stronger as a team and work together when we are tired or under pressure in the game” he said.
It was first time for 27-year-old hooker Sam Matavesi to train at the Dunes.
“It was very tough. We had the warm up where we had four sets, up and down the hill and my legs were done.”
“Its very good as we get to test ourselves after a weeks training in the ground. You can see after the session every-one was tired but were together which is good.”
Coach John McKee has been impressed seeing the level of commitments the players have put in during the first week in camp.
“We had a very good week here in Sigatoka. It was good to get the boys together and have some solid training runs at Lawaqa Park and finish off today at the Sand Dunes.”
Fiji Airways Flying Fijians breaks camp today and will gather again on Sunday in Suva.
