Fijiana continue to execute their plan going forth
Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s had their eyes firmly fixed on the Oceania 7s at the starting of the 2020 HSBC Sevens Series.
As revealed by Coach Saiasi Fuli the main focus was the qualification to the Olympics which hindered the start to their 2020 campaign at Glendale.
The Fijiana finished 10th at Glendale but qualified for the Olympics after winning the qualification final at Oceania 7s, and this was all part of the plan.
“We had a plan starting of the new season, to get a good offseason training to get the girls fit and mentally strong and split our squad for Glendale and the Oceania 7s.”
Fuli added that they didn’t perform well in Glendale as they were to freshen up the players ahead of the Oceania
“Thou we didn’t perform well in Glendale because that was all part of the plan to freshen up our girls for the Oceania which is our objective to qualify for the Olympics, and we achieved that with good outfit and performance from the girls.”
However the girls manage improve on the next two legs in Dubai and Cape Town with the aim of adding up to their points.
Fuli added that the focus now is to make it to the finals and rake in more points to climb up the HSBC table.
“We move on to play well and contribute to our points in the two legs after Glendale which was Cape Town and Dubai and we’ll continue to focus on this area in the rest of the 7s leg.”
“Although we are bringing up our game, we still have a lot of things to work on.”
With Hamilton 7s just 16 days away coach Fuli has been busy with the girls in training as they continue to bring the momentum to another level to align their play with the new format which will be a do or die situation.
“We have to train according to that format and plan well according to that format, it’s a do or die situation and we just need to work hard.”
Fuli added that managing their player base well will be crucial in order to prevent the players from fatigue.
“We just need to plan well for our player base and manage them well, we can’t overload players in certain tournaments and we need to balance our squad.”
Hamilton sevens kicks off on the 25 of January and Fijiana sits in pool A with New Zealand, England and China.
