The Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited is excited to announce that the FIJI Water Flying Fijians will face off against the Wallabies in a highly anticipated test match on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Australia. This thrilling encounter will mark the first time the Flying Fijians have played in Australia since 2017, with both teams eager to take the field in what promises to be an unforgettable clash.
This match will also serve as the Wallabies’ final preparation before their three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions. Fans can expect an intense showdown as the Flying Fijians and Wallabies pick-up from where they left-off at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in a match where Fiji created history by defeating the Australians for the very first time.
The match will be historic for another reason, as it will be only the third time that the Wallabies have hosted a Test match in the Hunter Region. Their last match in Newcastle took place in 2020 against Argentina, in a COVID-19-impacted season. With McDonald Jones Stadium holding special significance for the Wallabies, this upcoming Test promises to be a memorable occasion for both teams and their fans.
Australia and Fiji have faced each other 23 times in Test rugby, with the Wallabies holding a 19-3 winning record and one draw. While the Wallabies have dominated the fixture historically, the Flying Fijians have shown growth and skill in their previous encounters, making this match even more thrilling.
FIJI Water Flying Fijians Coach, Mick Byrne, says this July is another great opportunity to build our performances towards the RWC in 2027 in Australia.
“Starting our international season with a test match against Australia in Newcastle is an exciting prospect,” said Byrne.
“They have shown tremendous improvement since the RWC of 2023. Beating England and Wales and going close to Scotland and Ireland on their grand slam tour last year.”
“For us, playing 80 high quality repeated effort minutes against these Teir 1 teams is our ultimate goal which will allow us to show the exciting talent this team is building,” Byrne concluded.
