FIJI Water Flying Fijians: Review and Rebuild During Bye Week

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians are utilizing their bye week to regroup and fine-tune their game strategy ahead of their next test match against Tonga in the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This period of reflection and adjustment comes on the heels of a victorious clash against Samoa.

Head Coach Mick Byrne has emphasized the importance of this interim period in preparing for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Byrne is focused on building a strong team dynamic and is particularly keen on giving young players valuable game time to develop cohesion and experience.

Byrne offered positive feedback on the performances of emerging talents Ratu Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata, highlighting their synergy and strong on-field support for each other. “They’re good mates. The whole 6,7, and 8 combinations back each other on the field, and I thought the three of them did well. In a short time of training, there were a few roles for them to get done,” Byrne noted.

The National Coach also praised Captain Tevita for his leadership and preparation, describing it as a key factor in the team’s recent success. “Hats off to the Captain on leading the team. His preparation for the week was 100 percent, and I thought that was a great run-out for Tevita,” Byrne said.

Based in Nadi for the week, the Flying Fijians are using their time off to review their performance and bolster their strengths. The team will remain in camp, focusing on improving fitness and refining their strategies as they gear up for their upcoming match.

Coach Mick Byrne shared his optimism: “We are going to catch an opportunity to keep building our game, and also to catch some fitness in there just to keep us ticking over and get ready for the next few games.”

Following a promising performance in Suva against the Manu Samoa, the FIJI Water Flying Fijians are entering their second match of the tournament with high spirits and renewed focus.
