FIJI Water Flying Fijians Coach Mick Byrne Impressed with Young Team

FIJI Water Flying Fijians Coach Mick Byrne expressed his admiration for the team’s performance following their impressive 42-16 victory over Samoa in their first Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup match of 2024, held in Suva last Friday.

Despite having only three days of training before the match, the Flying Fijians showcased a dynamic and exhilarating brand of rugby that had the home fans on their feet. The victory was significantly bolstered by Kitione Salawa’s remarkable hat-trick of tries, which played a pivotal role in securing the win.

Byrne was elated for the young squad, guided by experienced veterans, who adapted quickly to the challenge. “I think they did well straight off the bat,” Byrne said. “They only had three training sessions through the week. There was some discipline during the first half, and we came in at half-time well led. The coaches did a great job.”

The match saw an electric start with Salawa scoring a superb try in the 4th minute. Samoa responded with a try from Pisi Leilua, converted in the 16th minute. Samoa added a penalty in the 26th minute, but Fiji’s Iosefo Masi brought fans to their feet with a powerful try in the 29th minute.

Samoa scored another penalty in the 35th minute before Fiji regained momentum with Salawa’s second try in the 54th minute. Frank Lomani added another try in the 59th minute. On debut, Vuate Karawalevu dazzled with a try in the 72nd minute, and Salawa sealed the game with his third try in the 78th minute.

Byrne also highlighted the commendable performance of the debutants, noting their nerves but praising their ability to rise to the occasion in front of home supporters. “Deep down, you know they’re going to be nervous, and they will try and play well. I thought they did well when they got their hands on the ball,” he remarked.

With the Flying Fijians now on a bye week in Pool A of the Pacific Nations Cup, attention turns to Tonga and Samoa, who will face off this weekend. The national team will use this time to prepare for their next challenge against Tonga, a formidable opponent known for their tough play on home ground.

The Flying Fijians’ victory has set a positive tone for their campaign, and fans are eager to see how the team builds on this momentum in their upcoming matches.
