FIJI Water Flying Fijians: Coach Lifts Training Intensity Ahead of Tonga Clash

As the FIJI Water Flying Fijians gear up for their upcoming match against Tonga, Head Coach Mick Byrne has intensified the team’s training regimen to ensure peak performance in their second game of the 2024 Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup.

Following a robust performance in their opening match last Friday, the Flying Fijians are using their bye week to focus on enhancing their fitness levels. Coach Byrne emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and energy during this period without a game.

“Yeah, I think in a bye week it’s important that we keep our focus. So, we’ve just lifted the intensity in training. When you don’t have a focus to the end of the week as a game, you’ve got to find other ways to bring the focus and the energy,” Byrne said after today’s grueling training session in Nadi.

Under the Nadi sun, the team was pushed through a series of high-intensity drills designed to sharpen their skills and stamina. This rigorous preparation is expected to be crucial for their upcoming encounter with Tonga, known as the Ikale Tahi, who pose a significant challenge when playing on their home ground.

“This is an opportunity for us to continue to work on our game. As a national team, we don’t usually get a lot of time before matches to do this,” Byrne added, highlighting the rare chance for in-depth preparation.

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians are set to face Tonga next Friday at 3pm Fiji Time. The match promises to be a crucial test of their enhanced fitness and tactical acumen as they seek to secure a strong position in the Pacific Nations Cup.
