Fiji Rugby postpones Skipper Cup and Vanua Championship matches

Fiji Rugby has deferred all its Skipper Cup round 12 matches and the Vodafone Vanua Championship semi-finals to next week.

The matches scheduled for Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October have been moved to next weekend and will be played on the 16th and 17th October 2020.

Fiji Rugby Chief Executive Mr. John O’Connor said “We have received confirmation from our venues including Ratu Cakobau Park, Prince Charles Park, Churchill Park and Lawaqa Park that due to the current prolonged wet weather experienced throughout the country and taking into consideration the present soggy ground conditions that we will not be able to host matches either on Friday and Saturday this week.”

He said “We have also sought guidance from the Fiji Meteorological Service and they have confirmed that the current wet weather conditions will prevail until Sunday next week.

Further, most of the venue owners have also indicated that their venues will be used for Fiji-50 celebrations.

As such we have no other options but to defer all the matches to next week.”

“I would like to thank the unions for the support” he said.

“We are working with the venue owners to rebook the venues for next week’s matches and the unions will be advised of the venues for the deferred rounds in the next few days.

We understand that a few Unions wanted to proceed with the matches but we have made the decision so that all team take a break this week” he added.

“Our competition was planned to commence in March but we have had to reschedule when given the greenlight (COVID-19 Compliant) and no one would ever foresee us still playing during this period and we thank the Unions for their support and understanding” said Mr. O’Connor.

Mr. O’Connor on behalf of the Rugby family in Fiji would like to wish all the players, supporters, stakeholders and most importantly our sponsors a Happy Fiji-50 Celebrations.
