Fiji on track for Dubai 7s
Fiji Airways Fijian 7s Coach Gareth Baber will reduce his squad to 14 this week as they set their sights on the opening HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament in Dubai next month.
Baber said he is pleased with the work the players have put in during the pre-season as they push hard for selection in the opening tournament team.
“They have just come out again this afternoon and done a tough session, ome of them have done up to 7.5 kilometres in one session which is tough for any team.”
“I’m pleased with where they are at” said Baber.
Baber said a strong start at the opening tournament in Dubai will help lay the foundations for what is a huge year ahead for international sevens rugby.
“It’s always nice to have a good start.”
“It can set you up for the season and push you in the direction you want.
Plus the stuff you’re doing in the off season can be proven to work” he explained.
“We didn’t have a good start last year, we didn’t win Dubai but we came back and won the Cape Town 7s.”
“Results aside, it’s more about us getting our game right and I believe if we do get our game right, other teams will have to play very well to beat us.
“I can’t guarantee wins, all I can do guarantee is we will work with the intention of winning every tournament we play” said Baber.
Fiji Airways Fijian 7s is pooled with France, Argentina and Japan.
They take on Japan at 4.02pm on the 6th of December then faces Argentina at 10.04pm and meets France at 4.02am the following day.
The Dubai 7s will run from the 6th to the 8th at The Sevens Stadium next month.
