Dubai 7s Pool Preview

Fiji Airways Fijian 7s are ready to kick off the 2020 HSBC Sevens Series in Dubai on Friday when they take on Japan in the opening pool game on Friday.

Fiji is in pool A with Argentina, Japan, and France and it won’t be a walk in the park for Fiji as all teams coming into the World Series will be expected to make a firing start to the opening round of HSBC Sevens Series.

Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber has been with the boys for the past 5 months of offseason training, looking to get them to another level as he knows the challenges that lies ahead.

“It has got to be tough, it’s the World Series and anybody that has been involved with it has seen how tough it can be.”

Fiji’s opening game is against Japan and Baber anticipates a strongly motivated side.

“we have seen some great performance from Japan at the Rugby World Cup, and they have been looking forward to taking it to the sevens as they’ll be hosting the next Olympic.”

Japan has got a 23 win % rate  with 677 total points scored and the player to watch out for is winger Katsuyuki Sakai who has scored 73 tries with a total of 823 points.

Fiji takes on Argentina in their second pool game on Friday 10.00pm and then plays France on their last pool game on Saturday at 4.02pm.

Baber emphasized that both Argentina and France have been coming in hard at Fiji in past series and they will have to pull up their A game on these matches.

“Argentina and France has been pushing us in the last few years, and we won’t be taking them easy.”

Argentina has a 52 winning percentage, has played 54 games in the last series and won 26 matches, Franco Sabato who is the top try scorer for his team will be the man to watch out for.

France reached two successive finals at the 2019 HSBC World Sevens Series, being runners up in Las Vegas and Hong Kong.

France will be coming in more prepared with high momentum as they be aiming to avenge their lost to Fiji at Hong Kong.
