Developing Women’s Rugby in Taveuni Island
Last week Fiji Rugby Development Unit held a one-week integrated rugby courses in the Island of Taveuni as part of the initiative to develop the game and increase women’s participation in rugby around the Island.
FRU Development introduced World Rugby Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Course, World Rugby Level 1 Match Officiating Course, and World Rugby Level 1 Strength & Conditioning Course, as well as the kids, Get into Rugby programme.
Majority of the women were interested in level 1 coaching course which saw 10 participants, 5 of which are women and the youngest is a 16-year-old girl from Somosomo village.
Fiji Rugby Regional Development Officer North Lemeki Savua said that this initiative was successful with the partnership with the District Officer as well as the Provincial Office.
“This programme is to build capacity for the Taveuni Club coaches, and also trying to increase the participation of women in rugby here in Taveuni.” Savua said.
“The respond from the villages was really positive, they really appreciated the programme to be introduced on their Island.”
“The commitment shown from the villagers was really positive as they showed how interested they’re in rugby courses introduced to them.”
The week finished off with a Motherhood program on Saturday celebrating our mother’s influence on Rugby development on the island.
