Corporal Kanace for National duties
Taking a break from her job in the military to pursue her rugby career holds special significance for Mary Kanace.
The talented full-back for Vodafone Fijiana 15’s is among the five newcomers making their debut in the World Rugby WXV3 tournament in Dubai.
Kanace began her journey as a Military Police at a young age, initially viewing rugby as a casual sport she played for fun.
Little did she know that a few years down the line, she would have the honor of representing her home country.
“This is truly special for me. I was born and raised in New Zealand, so returning to Fiji, my heritage, and connecting with my culture means the world to me.”
Kanace’s journey to representing Fiji began while playing for the Linwood Bulls, a club based in Christchurch.
She explained, “Representing Fiji was always a personal goal of mine. It wasn’t until about four years ago that I really started to learn more about the Fijiana team, and that’s when my interest in this path began to grow.”
She has spent over two months in training camp with the Fijiana team and shares her experiences:
“It’s been a completely different experience for me. While language is still a bit of a barrier, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the girls. They’ve been incredibly welcoming and always ready to help me understand the culture, especially the language.”
Kanace comes from a rugby-loving family, with her uncle, former Flying Fijian Waisiki Masirewa, and cousin, Japan winger Semisi Masirewa, being notable players.
“I grew up watching my uncle and cousins play rugby, and I am honored to be the first female in the family to pursue a rugby career. My family is incredibly supportive.”
With the possibility of donning the white jersey during the WXV tournament, Kanace has ambitious goals for herself and her team.
“I have personal objectives on the field that I’m determined to achieve. As it’s my first time representing my country, I’m committed to delivering my best performance,” she added.
The Vodafone Fijiana’s first WXV3 match is scheduled against Colombia on Saturday at 1 am.
