Condolence Messages
BARRIE SWEETMAN
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the untimely passing of one of our esteemed Life Members, Mr. Barrie Sweetman, earlier this week. Barrie, who celebrated his 90th birthday in September, was a key figure in the history of Fiji Rugby.
Born in Epsom, Auckland, Barrie moved to Fiji in 1960 to join the prestigious law firm now known as Munro Leys. His love for rugby led him to become deeply involved in the sport, first in Lautoka, and later in Suva, where he made significant contributions to Fiji Rugby. In the 1970s, he became a member of the executive committee and served as a National selector for nine years. Barrie’s leadership journey also included his appointment as assistant secretary, and later as Chairman of Fiji Rugby, a role he held for a decade. During his tenure, his efforts were instrumental in the purchase of the rugby house, a landmark achievement that remains a proud symbol of his legacy.
Barrie’s impact on rugby and his community extended beyond his professional role. He was a beloved husband to Anna and a devoted father to four children and grandfather to eight grandchildren. His passing leaves a profound void in all our hearts.
On behalf of the Fiji Rugby Union, we extend our deepest condolences to Anna, their children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing Barrie. He will be greatly missed, but his remarkable contributions and legacy in both rugby and law will never be forgotten.
NASONI ULUVULA
It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Nasoni Uluvula, a beloved former Fiji representative who first started playing for the country against Ireland in 1976. Nasoni’s contributions to rugby, both as a player for the national team and as captain of the Naitasiri side, have left an indelible mark on the sport and in the hearts of all who knew him.
Nasoni was not only a fierce competitor on the field but also a true leader, guiding his team against formidable opponents, including the late Mosese Taga of Suva, another Flying Fijian legend. His dedication to the game and his embodiment of the values of hard work, camaraderie, and resilience will continue to inspire generations of rugby players in Fiji and beyond.
On behalf of the entire Fiji Rugby family, we extend our deepest condolences to Nasoni’s family, friends, and loved ones. May you find comfort in the cherished memories and legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Vinaka vakalevu, Nasoni, for your invaluable contributions to Fiji Rugby. Rest in peace, champion.
