Coach Update: Byrne Impressed with Performance

FIJI Water Flying Fijians Coach Mick Byrne expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance during a post-match press conference after their 21-12 victory over Georgia at the Adjarabet Arena. Assembling a squad last weekend to face a robust Georgian team, Byrne was particularly pleased with the defense, which withstood numerous attacks from the Lelos, who played in front of enthusiastic home supporters.

“I think our defense tonight showed that we’ve been working hard. We missed a few attacking opportunities, but I’m extremely impressed with how our team played,” Byrne shared.

Byrne acknowledged that the Fijians anticipated the challenge from the hosts, particularly in the breakdown area, and were prepared for the physicality and intensity of the Georgian side.

The match saw the introduction of five debutants to test rugby: Isaiah-Washington Ravula, Elia Canakaivata, Inia Tabuavou, Kitione Salawa, and Peniasi Dakuwaqa. Dakuwaqa, in particular, made an immediate impact, scoring two tries and showcasing his pace on the wing.

The match was also notable for Peni Ravai, who earned his 50th test cap for Fiji. Reflecting on his journey, Ravai shared, “It’s been a long journey for me and my family. I’m here to help the young boys carry on with the Flying Fijians in the future. I don’t know when I will finish playing, but I’m here to pass on the knowledge to the upcoming boys.”

Ravai highlighted his most memorable moment as being selected for the 2015 Rugby World Cup team that played in England.
