CAMAKAU EDGE TAKIA IN NAIL-BITER AS COACHES HIGHLIGHT GROWTH AND POTENTIAL OF WOMEN’S RUGBY

It was a match that came down to a single kick—and in the end, Camakau edged past Takia 17–15 in a tightly contested round three clash of the Na Soko Tournament at Lawaqa Park. The difference? A single conversion slotted by Camakau fly-half Salote Nailolo that sealed the narrow win after both sides scored three tries apiece.
Camakau showed tremendous improvement from earlier rounds, with head coach Aca Ratuva noting that increased training time together and team cohesion had a major impact.
“From the first round, one of our biggest challenges was the limited time we had together,” Ratuva said. “Now, in Week three, we’ve really gelled, and the result showed today. It was a big improvement.”
Takia focused their work-ons around key technical areas: set pieces, ruck efficiency, defensive structure, and attacking shape. Their commitment was clear on the field, with standout performances from Su Railumu, Linda Poulter, and fly-half Sala Nailolo.
Ratuva, who has primarily coached men, shared his reflections on working with women in the game: “Coaching women has taught me that communication is key. You need to be very clear and intentional. When you’re driving a strategy through, it has to hit the mark.”
Camakau tries came from Nailolo, Michelle Stolz, and Livia Tubailagi, with Nailolo’s conversion proving decisive
Meanwhile, Takia’s hoped to seal another win this week slipped away following a red card to Rebecca Mata and a composed performance from Camakau, who capitalized on their chances to secure the win.
Off the field, Takia’s assistant coach Oripa Lee spoke passionately about the broader vision behind the franchise format and what it means for women’s rugby in Fiji.
“I’m truly grateful for this franchise concept—it’s created a platform for players who aren’t in the HPU system,” Lee said.
“We’re now seeing new and upcoming players stepping forward and showcasing their talent. Instead of relying on the same group, we have a wider pool, and that’s vital for the growth of the women’s game.”
Mrs Lee pointed out the incredible transformation over the past three rounds, especially in player confidence and knowledge.
“Many girls came in unsure in round one. Now they’re confident to ask questions, seeking feedback, and wanting to improve. Some come to me directly—maybe because I’m a woman and they feel more comfortable. That says a lot about the need for more women in coaching.”
She also acknowledged the support of male coaches and the evolving culture around women’s rugby. “There’s more patience, better communication, and respect. It’s made a big difference in how the girls are learning.”
Looking ahead, both Ratuva and Lee believe the competition will grow and attract more support
“We’re building something special,” Lee added. “We need more women to raise their hands—for coaching, management, and leadership. This isn’t about competition. It’s about collaboration and empowerment.”
With close matches like this one and strong voices emerging from the sidelines, the Na Soko Tournament is doing more than producing results—it’s paving the way for a stronger, more inclusive future for women’s rugby in Fiji.
