4 Changes Made – Byrne Impressed with Ravula at Full-Back
With the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup Semi-Final set to kick off tomorrow, FIJI Water Flying Fijians Head Coach Mick Byrne has made slight tactical changes to his starting lineup. The adjustments come in preparation for the crucial match against the USA, following the team’s performance in their previous game against Tonga.
In a strategic move in comparison to the run-on team in Nuku’alofa, Byrne has introduced four changes to the starting team. Isoa Nasilasila will replace Mesake Vocevoce at lock, while Elia Canakaivata transitions from open side flanker to number 8, taking over from Albert Tuisue. This shift sees Kitione Salawa stepping into the open side flanker position. Additionally, Inia Tabuvou will start in place of Adrea Cocagi, who received a four-match ban for dangerous play last week.
In a notable decision, Byrne has chosen to include two fly-halves in the lineup again. Caleb Muntz will take the number 10 jersey, while Isaiah Ravula will start at fullback. Byrne expressed confidence in Ravula’s ability to adapt to the role, highlighting his experience as a fly-half.
“Isaiah is a great young player and as a great 10 he reads the game well. And just like any number 10 that shifts to fullback, they know what the 10s are looking for, so they’re able to fill the space very quickly,” Byrne explained. “When they go back to 15, they have an awareness of what the opposite 10 is trying to do, which helps. His ability to read the game well will be crucial for us.”
Byrne praised Ravula’s performance and comfort in the fullback position, noting, “He’s been enjoying the freedom at the back, and so far he’s been good in that position.”
With the semi-final just around the corner, Byrne assured that the team is in high spirits and fully prepared for the challenge. He acknowledged the nationwide support the team is receiving, with fans set to tune in from across the country.
