Best ever experience says Matavesi

FIJI Water Flying Fijians hooker Sam Matavesi believes this week has given him a chance to know how his dad and grandparents lived in a village as he experiences what it is like to live in a village setting as the team finished their fourth day of camp in Welagi, Taveuni.

The 31-year-old who has been part of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians since 2013 said “This is the best experience I have ever had with the Flying Fijians team in Fiji.

“This is how I believe in my dad and his dad and those before him had lived and I’m now living in their footstep experiencing how they used to live,” said Matavesi.

This is Matavesi’s first trip to Taveuni and he believes that it has been an amazing experience so far.

“It’s an awesome experience and I think it brings the whole team together under one roof.

We leave and sleep there, we train here and I think you can see all the people from different villagers on the island are here watching and supporting us” said Matavesi.

It was all business for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians today as they underwent two tough training sessions at Welagi ground.

The 24-cap Flying Fijians believe that they have to work hard towards the ultimate goal of their first week in camp.

Matavesi said “It’s been tough and today was really tough training. What we have done today is we have worked really hard in batches and then we have to come in together.

So we ran four reps and then we had to go straight away into our lineouts and scrums to get to feel under fatigue.

I think both training sessions were tough and that’s what we need to achieve our goals.”

The Vanuabalavu native is a vital member of the squad and is expected to give his best to take charge of the front row and the scrums during the July Test Series which kicks off on the 22nd of this month at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians take on Tonga on the 22nd before playing Samoa a week later on the 29th before facing Japan on August 5th.
