Basiyalo Embraces New Challenge with Fiji 7s Squad
Rising rugby talent Sikeli Basiyalo has taken a significant step in his career, joining the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s squad earlier this week after being called up from the Fijian Drua training camp.
The 21-year-old forward received the unexpected call from head coach Glen Jackson on Monday, informing him that Fiji 7s coach Osea Kolinisau wanted him to join the national 7s setup.
Alongside fellow young talent Aisea Nawai, Basiyalo is one of two new inclusions in the team as preparations intensify for the Hong Kong 7s.
Basiyalo said he is excited about the opportunity.
“Happy to be part of the 7s team—it’s going well. Playing 7s is a whole different challenge, the speed of the game is much higher than what I’m used to,” he said.
The call-up came as a surprise to the 21-year-old.
“When I was called, I didn’t believe it at first, but I was actually happy and keen. For a long time, I wanted to try and play 7s as well. Glad that I am able to come here and learn a lot of things,” Basiyalo added.
Despite the adjustment period, he remains focused on making the most of his time in camp, aiming to absorb as much as possible from the experienced squad members.
“My goal is to learn everything I can so I can take it back to the Drua and improve my game,” he said.
The next job for the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s squad is the upcoming Hong Kong 7s.
