Macuata crowned women’s Vanua Champion
Macuata women’s team was crowned the 2020 Vodafone Vanua Championship winners after beating Serua 34-24 in a pulsating final at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Serua number 8, Elena Kirikirikula scored the first try of the game after a well-read interception in their opponents half.
Macuata then managed to score two tries in two minutes, one each from Salia Tuilevuka and Vitalina Naikore.
The game was picking up its momentum and Serua closed the gap with a try in the 21st minute through Amelia Vatutawa.
Macuata continued building phases and some quick passes from their backline helped them extend the lead 24-12 at the halftime.
It seemed Serua was going to make a come-back, scoring two tries through Siteri Kalouniuca and Vani Ravule in the second spell.
The visitors from Vanua Levu then picked up the momentum and gained confidence whenever they visited Serua’s territory.
Vitalina Naikore and Lanieta Lala nailed the victory for Macuata as they defeated Serua 34-24.
Macuata Coach Maria Tamotubiu thanked the girls for showcasing a gutsy performance.
Tamotubiu said “I want to congratulate the girls for the win as they have gave their 100 percent to ensure we seal the game in style.”
She added “My message to the girls at the break was simple.
I told them we have settled well and we just need to keep pushing ourselves until the final whistle.”
Serua Coach Sireli Bobo said “We played well but it was not our day.
There were a few errors and we also had chances to win but we failed make it count.”
Macuata walked away with $5000 while Serua were awarded $2000.
