World Series Places on the line at Oceania Sevens

The Oceania Rugby Sevens Championships kick-off this Friday at ANZ Stadium in Suva, Fiji, and for the first time the men’s and women’s events have been fully combined across the two days of competition.

Importantly for Oceania Rugby, as well as Championship titles up for grabs in the men’s and women’s tournaments, there are also qualifying places for future World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments to be played for.

In the men’s championship the best placed team – excluding World Series core teams Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa – will win a spot at the 2017 Wellington Sevens (Jan) and 2017 Sydney Sevens (Feb). The two best placed teams excluding the core teams will win spots at the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens in April.

In the women’s championship the best placed team – excluding World Series core teams Australia and New Zealand – will win a spot at the 2017 Sydney Sevens (Feb) and will also qualify to play in the 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series qualifying tournament in Hong Kong (April).

The 17 captains gathered today for the traditional pre-Championship photograph at the University of the South Pacific. The Championships kick-off at 1000 on Friday 11 November when Fijiana play Papua New Guinea in the women’s championship.
